“By the sweat of your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” —Genesis 3:19
This verse breeds a new humility in me today. I’m not sure I’ve ever understood Ash Wednesday, as I do today. It hits me a little deeper now, penetrating into untouched parts of my soul. My heart is heavy, breaking as the realizations come flooding in. Today is February 18th—two months exactly since Theo died. Today is Ash Wednesday—marking the first day of Lent, a time for reflection and preparation for Easter. In the Bible, ashes were often used to demonstrate a time of mourning. Even today we use them in Ash Wednesday services as a reminder of our own mortality. For you are dust, and to dust you shall return.
